Discover the History of Brickell
Brickell is an area located south of the Miami River and
contained in greater Downtown Miami. Brickell is the Financial district of
Miami with Banks and Hedge Funds from around the world and Luxury tall condo
buildings that define its skyline. But Brickell’s history started in 1870 when
William and Mary Brickell opened a trading post where Indians would sell their
deer skins and alligator hides and use the cash to buy calico, beads and sewing
machines from the Brickell’s.
In 1908 after William’s passing, Mary started developing the
land alongside the bay and called it “Millionaires Row”, followed by Brickell
Ave in 1911. In 1912 sold 130 acres of land to James Deering for the
construction of Viscaya; Mary also started developing the area known as “The
Roads” followed by “Coconut Grove” with the whole area rapidly becoming one of
the most exclusive neighborhoods in Miami. Although most of the original
mansions in Brickell were demolished and replaced with office buildings, Luxury
Condominiums and high end hotels what didn’t change is the prestige of the area
among the best in Miami which was the vision of Mary Brickell.
