Discover some of the history of the city of South Miami
Just south of Coral Gables down US-1 is the city of South Miami. Originally
Town of South Miami the area suffered extensive damage by the great hurricane
of September 1926, and although
the town requested federal assistance, asking Congress to "relieve the
people of their income tax for the current year", none was received. To
make matters worse, the Florida East Coast Railway station burned down, leaving
the town without a station for many years. Feeling that the "town"
was being ignored by the State and Federal Governments, residents began calling
for a change to a "city", and on June 24, 1927, the Town of South
Miami ceased to exist and the City of South Miami was born.
Although only about 3 square miles, the city of South Miami offers many
perks to its residents. Besides its beautiful residential homes with large lush
backyards, people can stroll down Sunset drive for a variety of small
boutiques. Visit the Shops at Sunset Place, an outdoor mall with dozens of
stores, a 24 theater AMC cinema, Splitsville Bowling alley, and several dining
options. Enjoy Area Stage, home to one of Miami’s long running theater groups
and conservatory programs. Visit one of the 15 parks located within South Miami
like the Marshall Williamson Park. Walk down 73rd street for a variety
of restaurants and cafes. Or go to the business district in Sunset Drive and
enjoy its busy festival schedule like the South Miami arts festival, Santa’s
parade of elves, the Twilight Run, or the occasional classic car show.
