Discover the history of Coral Gables - the "City Beautiful"

Coral Gables, the “City Beautiful” was incorporated in 1925, influenced by the City Beautiful Movement that swept across America in the early 1900’s, and inspired by the works of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, who designed New York’s Central Park. The city offers tree-lined avenues, green spaces, museums, art galleries, and golf courses all envisioned by George Merrick. founder of Coral Gables.

Among the wonders of the real estate boom in the area in the 1920’s is The Biltmore Hotel inspired by the Giralda tower of the Cathedral of Seville, Spain; Coral Gables City Hall, Coral Gables Merrick House, Venetian Pool, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and over 1,300 locally designated historic places that have been preserved and remain a jewel of the city.
In 1986, the City adopted a Mediterranean Architectural Ordinance, which provides incentives to builders who conform to the Mediterranean Revival style, using terra cotta colors and barrel tile roofs.

Aside from beautiful residential homes with lush landscaping and golf courses, Coral Gables also offers arts, shopping and entertainment. Stroll down the streets of downtown Coral Gables and discover art galleries, furnishing emporiums, fine jewelers, the Miracle Theater, Gables Art Cinema, over 100 restaurants, and clothing boutiques including the famous “Bridal Row” where brides-to-be from around the world can find their gown, design invitations, set up a cake tasting, and shop for wedding bands—all in one day. Or the Village of Merrick Park with over 100 boutiques and designer stores.
